In 2007, the largest dog-fighting ring in Illinois history was shut down. The Cook County Sheriff's Department rescued 37 injured dogs from an old chicken coop behind a South Holland home. Treadmills and weights for strength training were found along with a breeding room. Typically, dogs from these situations are euthanized once they are rescued. This story has a rare, but happy ending.
People begged for these dogs to be saved. Curtis was immediately contacted to perform temperament testing and implement training exercises with the dogs who had potential. He spent hours and hours making sure the dogs were not people or dog aggressive. He tested for resource guarding and overall mental health.
In the end, Curtis felt only eight had to be put down. "Without his help, all the dogs would've died," said Linda Bober, humane investigator on this case.
These dogs have been rehabilitated and are truly wonderful pets. Many are in homes or doing well at rescues.
